What our Customers Say

Rapid Prototype and Proof of Concept

We had the need to develop a production ready web site to assist in collecting and reporting on operational best practice areas for our organisation. The time scales were tight and the business needed the application to go live go live at an annual conference which was a matter of weeks away. Andy came in understood quickly our requirements, improved on them and produced a web site fit for purpose on time and to budget. We later engaged Andy again to produce the next generation of the site that included two further apps one of which was a variant of the initial product the other was a new build. Andy saw the opportunity to refactor the existing code base allowing us to reap the benefit of a shared code base for both applications. The applications are now running in production. We are very happy with Andy's work and he added significant value to our development team showing them ways of coding they had not encountered before.

Project on time, and bug free

Extraxi produces reporting tools for Identity products, such as CiscoSecure, and Funk Steal Belt Radius server. The distributed nature of identity systems meant there was a requirement to integrate tightly with these products to obtain their various log files for reporting. Andy was bought in to architect and build a tool that would allow the collection of these logs in a central location. The tool was built on time, and on budget. It is in widescale use at many of our large corporate clients and used on daily basis, and has proved to be 100% reliable.

Mentoring

CI Systems develop and market a software system that has been designed to automate stages of the pharmaceutical manufacturing process. This configurable package was developed under the Visual Studio 6 environment utilising object oriented methodology and a software development process incorporating the UML tools. Andy’s remit was to assist the software development team in upgrading their skills to current technology (using the .Net environment), selecting a set of tools to aid this development (e.g. for unit testing, code review, version control, daily build and fault recording), defining an architecture for future development, and improving the software development process. Following the very successful knowledge transfer phase Andy is now assisting us, on an on-going bi-monthly basis, acting as a mentor during the architectural, design and code phases of project development.

Architectural Guidance

Richard came to Golfbreaks to assist us with an existing application developed in WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) which has been used in a live environment for an extended period of time. Our goal was to get a review of the framework which we had developed and to find some solutions for extensions to it which we didn’t have the expertise in house to develop. The two day consultation was, in our opinion, something which was invaluable to the application as Richards advice and expertise not only allowed us to meet our objectives but also provided the development team with a much greater depth of knowledge on WCF which will enable our application to perform much better for us in the future. We found Richard to be professional and friendly, patient and willing to work with us in a flexible way to meet our objectives. He was very knowledgable and was willing to go the extra mile to help work though the issues which we were having. I would recommend Richard wholeheartedly as a consultant and we will definitely be using him again as the need arises in the future.

Conference Speakers

We've been running the annual DevWeek conference www.devweek.com since 1998, and Software Architect www.software-architect.co.uk since 2007. The success of both events depends very heavily on the quality of the speakers, so we work hard to get lots of detailed evaluation feedback from attendees, on the basis of which we decide which speakers to invite back the next time. All the members of the Rock Solid Knowledge team have been speaking at our events for a number of years, and they always get invited back.

Design Expertise

We engaged the services of Kevin primarily as a .Net expert because we had a major conversion project to move us onto a new technical platform. At the same time we also decided to redesign our website. The breadth of Kevin's skills was invaluable to us. He provided technical and architectural expertise and was always willing to get deep into the detail in complex areas of development and design. Probably not as easy to gauge, but very important to the project, was his clarity of approach and pragmatism when dealing with difficult areas of the project. He managed to simplify areas that we were overcomplicating and liaised with the business very effectively. This was a very difficult project for a number of different reasons and Kevin contributed enormously to its successful implementation.

Rapid Prototyping

Richard was contracted to provide assistance during a rapid prototyping session to prove the conversion of an existing large-scale infrastructure, from .NET Remoting to WCF, would be possible. In two days we not only had designed the architecture for the system, but also implemented a hybrid design which allowed the design to be proven. Follow-up work has completed the conversion of the infrastructure allowing Adastra to take advantage of WCF security and encryption in supplying it's wide-area healthcare systems. Richard's knowledge of WCF is unsurpassed and Rock Solid Knowledge are thoroughly recommended

Design Guidance and Prototyping

First DataBank is the UKs leading provider of electronic medicines information, drug databases and clinical decision support. We deliver this information to our customers in a variety of formats, and wanted to explore the possibility of offering our content via a web service or web API. We brought Richard on board to advise on technology, design and to create a working prototype for us to carry forward. Within just a few days we had established a design that satisfied all of our high-level requirements and yet was simple to build and maintain. Getting this clarity of design at an early stage is crucial to success and has enabled us to capture all the potential issues and risks at the earliest possible stage. Given the cost saving this brings I am sure we will turn to Rock Solid Knowledge again in the future.
